Visual Arts - Sounding Like a Mountain

The Visual Arts – Sounding Like a Mountain residency invites visual artists to engage with the acoustic ecology of the Banff region over a five‑week period in May–June 2027. Participants are encouraged to develop projects that interrogate how places sing, how memory persists in vibration, and how listening to the land can re‑orient ethical and political relations. The program blends faculty‑led workshops, one‑to‑one mentorship, and access to a wide range of production facilities, including studios, fabrication labs, and specialized equipment for sound, printmaking, sculpture, and performance. Artists receive a single bedroom on campus, all meals, and a Banff Centre Arts Scholarship that covers tuition, accommodation, and meals for eligible participants. The residency is open to individual artists or duos (no more than two collaborators) of any career stage, provided they are available for the full duration, have post‑secondary training or equivalent experience, and are not accompanied by children in studio spaces. Applications are due by 18 November 2026 and include an online form, a $65 CAD application fee (or $35 CAD for Indigenous applicants), and a portfolio of 6–10 works. The Banff Centre offers a supportive environment for research‑based practice, community building, and public engagement through exhibitions and seminars.
