Shoeburyness Commission: Call for Proposals
Essex Cultural Diversity Project
About This Opportunity
Essex Cultural Diversity Project (ECDP) is commissioning a new project that responds to the history of Shoeburyness, near Southend, and celebrates the area’s military past while enabling local people to tell their own stories. The commission offers a budget of £10,000 and runs from January to September 2027, with a start‑up period in the week of 7 December 2026. Artists working in any medium and at any career stage are welcome to apply, provided they can spend substantial time on‑site engaging with participants. The project should involve community collaboration, aiming to involve at least 150 individuals, three community groups, and deliver six workshops. Proposals may be submitted in written, video, or audio format (video ≤10 min) via email by midnight on 24 November 2026. The brief, a downloadable PDF, outlines suggested creative starting points, expectations for community engagement, and possible forms of final artwork, which will be exhibited at the Cart & Wagon Shed in summer 2027. ECDP will provide support, including 1‑2‑1 meetings, a monitoring form, and access to the Cart & Wagon Shed facilities. The commission seeks diverse, participatory practices that highlight under‑represented voices and connect heritage with contemporary community care.
