About This Opportunity

The Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble (VCME) is launching its third Composer Commission Project, calling for aspiring and innovative composers from across Canada to create new 5–7 minute works for its ensemble. Five selected composers will each receive a $500 CAD commission and will work closely with Artistic Director Jirong Huang and Resident Composer Alan Lau throughout the creative process. Selected composers will participate in a public reading session tentatively scheduled for Spring 2027, where they can interact directly with musicians and refine their compositions based on feedback. The finalized works will be presented at a concert in Fall 2027. The project welcomes composers of all musical and cultural backgrounds and at all career stages, with a preference for emerging artists who have not previously worked with Chinese instruments. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents; there is no age restriction. Submission requirements include audio and/or video samples of up to three existing works, a curriculum vitae, and a short statement of interest (maximum one page). The application deadline is October 1, 2026, and selected composers will be notified by November 30, 2026. Applicants are responsible for covering their own costs to attend workshops, rehearsals, and the final concert presentation.
