About This Opportunity

Fishtrap Writer-in-Residence is a program based in rural Wallowa County, Oregon, that invites experienced teaching artists to spend 5–7 weeks immersed in the community. During the residency, participants receive a stipend, travel allowance, and lodging, and are scheduled for up to 40 hours of classroom teaching in local schools. In addition, they lead a one‑day adult workshop as part of Fishtrap’s local writing workshop series and host a public reading event at the historic Bowlby Building. The remainder of the time is dedicated to the writer’s own creative work, exploration of the county, and engagement with the local writing community. Applicants must be professional writers with proven teaching and classroom‑management experience, especially at the secondary level. The residency operates on a rolling basis, with no fixed deadline, and is open to writers who wish to combine creative practice with community outreach.
