Open Call 2028: South West-Based Artist Commission
Spike Island
About This Opportunity
Spike Island is pleased to invite applications from artists based in the South West of England to develop a major new commission to be presented in our galleries in summer 2028. The successful artist will receive an artist fee of £4,000 and a production budget of £8,500 (exclusive of VAT) to cover materials, fabrication and other direct costs. Spike Island will also cover exhibition‑related expenses such as installation, transport, insurance, travel, accommodation, per diems and documentation within the limits of the available budget. The artist will benefit from curatorial and technical support, access to a residency studio (if they do not already have a studio at Spike Island), and use of an edit suite for research or production. Promotion will be provided through Spike Island’s website and social media. Applications are open to artists of any medium and career stage, except those currently undertaking an undergraduate course, and must be based in the South West of England as defined by Arts Council area designations. The deadline to apply is Sunday 13 December 2026 at 23:59 GMT. An online information session will be held on Friday 6 November 2026 at 11 am.
