The Space Taking Artist Residency

The Space Taking Artist Residency (STAR) is a six‑week program run by Fresh Arts, a Houston‑based nonprofit that supports under‑represented artists. The residency offers full 24/7 access to a 2,500‑square‑foot gallery space at Sawyer Yards, a $3,600 stipend to cover production costs, marketing and public‑relations support, and one‑on‑one mentorship from a former STAR artist. The program is open to emerging and mid‑career artists and artist teams who reside in the Greater Houston area. Two residency cohorts are available in 2027: March 15–April 25 and July 15–August 30. Applications close on November 23, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. CST. Applicants can learn more and register through Fresh Arts’ online portal, attend a free virtual information session on October 22, and submit proposals via the Submittable form linked on the site. The residency is funded in part by the Texas Commission on the Arts, the Houston Endowment, and the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance, in partnership with Sawyer Yards and Arts District Houston.
