The Wild Seed Project is seeking artists and illustrators to create a series of botanical and ecological illustrations for its 2027 native‑plant gardening guide, which focuses on shade‑loving plants of the Northeastern United States. Selected artists will receive a $6,000 stipend and will work closely with Wild Seed Project staff, receiving reference photographs and species information to ensure scientific accuracy. Deliverables include full‑color front and back cover artwork, spot illustrations, and six full‑page plant‑community illustrations, with staggered deadlines between October 2026 and January 2027. Applicants must submit ten low‑resolution JPEG images, a statement of interest (PDF), a brief bio (PDF), and a CV (PDF) via email, using the subject line “Last Name – 2027 Open Call Application”. The call is open to artists of any background over age 18, with priority given to queer, trans, non‑binary, Black, Indigenous, and other historically marginalized artists, as well as emerging or early‑career creators, especially those with a personal or regional connection to the Northeastern U.S. International artists are welcome, but a connection to the region is strongly preferred. Digital media are accepted; AI‑generated work and photography are not. Selections will be announced by mid‑August, and the chosen artist will begin collaboration in October 2026.
