The Alabama Historical Commission has issued an open call to artists to design a permanent memorial honoring the Clotilda survivors – the last known group of African captives trafficked to the United States through the transatlantic slave trade. The memorial will convey the survivors’ lives, resilience and legacies, and will be developed through a collaborative process engaging the historic Africatown community and the wider diaspora. The commission is open to artists internationally and offers a total project budget of $2,000,000. Proposals must be submitted by Sunday, August 9, 2026 (11:59 p.m. CST). No entry fee is required. Applications are submitted via the provided Codaworx link.
