Tallgrass Artist Residency
Tallgrass Artist Residency
About This Opportunity
The Tallgrass Artist Residency is a ten‑night, place‑based program located at Matfield Station in Matfield Green, Kansas. It invites individual artists or artist teams to retreat, research, and create in the tallgrass prairie landscape of the Great Plains. Residents receive lodging for the full two‑week period, a $650 stipend from the Kansas Arts Commission to cover travel and material costs, and access to staff at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. In exchange, residents present a public program during their stay, document their experience through daily Instagram posts, and provide a post‑residency summary for the residency’s website. Applicants must currently reside within the prairie ecoregion (with one dedicated exchange slot for artists from outside the region), must not have previously participated in the program, and must be able to arrange their own transportation and meals. The 2027 cycle opens on October 1, 2026 and closes on October 31, 2026, with selections announced on December 15, 2026. Residencies run from April to September 2027.
