About This Opportunity

The Center for Afrofuturist Studies hosts 1-6 week residencies in Iowa City for artists of color from across the US and beyond. Gilbert Street, Iowa City) is open weekly: Mon 11a-1p Tues 6-8p Thurs 6-8p Sat 11a-1p ## call for art (Iowa City area) In partnership with the Iowa City Senior Center, ICPL, and FilmScene, we're hosting a ommunity-wide celebration of Black creativity, imagination, and the future. This will include Afrofuturistic Art Display in our two galleries during January and February 2026, along with an Afrofuturistic Fashion Show during Black History Month. We would love to feature the work of talented local Black artists — including paintings, mixed media, sculpture, textiles, photography, digital art, or wearable designs that explore themes of: Black history and futures, science fiction and fantasy, innovation, technology, and culture, and community resilience and imagination. We welcome existing and new work. Timeline & Key Dates * Intent to participate due: November 15, 2025 * Artwork ready for pickup/drop-off: January 3–7, 2026 * Gallery installation: January 8–9, 2026 * Artwork pickup/return: February 24–28, 2026 Support for Artists All artists will be credited in signage, programs, and social media. We will assist with installation but artist must be in attendance and can bring assistance. We will provide basic insurance while the work is on display.
