About This Opportunity

The Roman J. Witt Residency Program, supported by alumna Penny W. Stamps, is an annual international competition that awards a single residency per academic year to a visiting artist or designer. The resident receives a $20,000 honorarium, up to $10,000 in materials, research and development funding, private housing (provided via Airbnb in Ann Arbor), and a private studio space equipped with a full range of media facilities. The residency spans approximately six months, with a primary in‑person production period in the winter of the academic year and a second, shorter on‑site phase for installation and exhibition in the fall. Residents are expected to engage actively with the Stamps community and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities, offering workshops, lectures, open studio hours, and collaborative projects with students and faculty. The program is open to both established and emerging artists and designers, individuals or collaborative teams, without nationality restrictions. Applications are submitted through SlideRoom and require a $15 USD application fee. The most recent call closed on 15 January 2026, but the residency is a recurring annual opportunity, with future cycles announced on the Stamps School website.
