University of Johannesburg
About This Opportunity

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) invites emerging and established artists‑academics from around the world, preferably with a connection to Africa, to apply for the 2027 Artists in Residence Programme. The 10‑month residency supports creative practice as research across visual arts, performance, film & television, and literary arts. Applicants must not be affiliated with another South African tertiary institution and should hold a relevant post‑school qualification, with preference for master’s or PhD holders. Successful artists receive a monthly stipend of R12,000 for the duration of the residency (total R120,000) and access to limited office, studio, rehearsal and performance spaces, either remotely or on‑site. No additional seed funding, travel, accommodation or per diems are provided. The programme includes a virtual information session on 17 August 2026 and a competitive academic selection process based on professional track record and project feasibility. Applications close on 31 August 2026.
