Mount Allison University Public Art Opportunities – Mi'kmaq Basketry & Wabanaki Ornamental Doorway

Mount Allison University (Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada) is seeking Indigenous artists and Indigenous‑led artistic teams to create two permanent public artworks for the upcoming R.P. Bell Library: Centre for Innovation and Learning. The first commission, Mi'kmaq Basketry, calls for Mi'kmaq basket makers or Mi'kmaq‑led teams to design an indoor suspended basketry installation that celebrates Mi'kmaq basketry traditions. The second commission, Wabanaki Ornamental Doorway, invites Wabanaki artists or Wabanaki‑led teams to design a permanent artwork for an ornamental doorway portico, honouring Wabanaki knowledge systems. Both opportunities offer an all‑inclusive budget of $100,000 CAD, covering artist fees, design development, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, and applicable taxes. Applications must be submitted electronically as Expressions of Interest by 4 p.m. ADT on 7 October 2026. Eligibility is limited to artists who are eligible to work in Canada, are Indigenous (Mi'kmaq for the basketry commission; Wabanaki for the doorway commission), and are not employees of Mount Allison University. Required submission materials include a résumé/CV, a statement of artistic approach, images of past work, and two professional references. The selected artists will work collaboratively with the university’s Indigenous Talking Circle and project team throughout the design and construction phases, which are scheduled from May 2027 to January 2030.
