John E. Nance Adult Writer-in-Residence Program
Thurber House
About This Opportunity
Thurber House’s John E. Nance Adult Writer-in-Residence Program provides writers of adult literature with two weeks of uninterrupted time and space to advance their projects. Residents live in a fully furnished apartment on the third floor of the historic Thurber House and receive a $5,000 honorarium. In exchange, residents participate in one or two Thurber House programs such as workshops, author talks, or community outreach. Each year two residencies are offered: an Established Writer Residency (open to writers from any U.S. state/territory) and an Emerging Writer Residency (restricted to current or former Ohio residents). Applications for the 2027 cycle open on October 15, 2026, with a deadline of January 17, 2027 at 11:59 pm ET. The application fee is $20. Eligibility includes being over 18, having recent publications or performances, and having a current work in progress. The residency includes Wi‑Fi, a full kitchen, bathroom, two bedrooms, a bike, and free parking. Travel arrangements are the resident’s responsibility, but the stipend is intended to cover related expenses. Selections are announced in March or April, and the residency can be scheduled any time between September and February based on the resident’s availability.
