About This Opportunity

The L‑AIR Himeji Artist‑in‑Residence Program invites artists from any discipline to create works that interrogate the possibilities of leather as a material. Set in the historic leather‑making town of Takagi, Himeji, the residency offers up to three months of studio and presentation space, leather materials, and technical support. Applicants are encouraged to engage with local craftsmen, residents, and the broader community, documenting their process through open studio sessions, talks, and a final exhibition. The program runs in four seasonal editions, each with its own application deadline: 30 Sep 2026, 30 Nov 2026, 1 Mar 2027, and 31 May 2027. Selected artists receive a production support fee of up to JPY 250,000 per month (Japanese artists) or JPY 150,000 per month (international artists), accommodation and studio space, and round‑trip travel support. All works created with provided leather materials are donated to L‑AIR for archival exhibitions. The residency is open to artists of all ages, nationalities, and disciplines, provided they can communicate in Japanese or English and are willing to share their process publicly.
