About This Opportunity

Kai Liu is a Chinese-Canadian artist working across painting, printmaking, and mixed media. His practice explores semi-abstract landscapes shaped by nature, perception, and migration, drawing on Eastern aesthetics and cross-cultural experience. The artist's work delves into contemplative abstraction by blending painting and printmaking techniques to evoke the fluidity of time and the emotional resonance of nature. This body of work, created as part of his MFA thesis, draws on Chinese ink painting principles, moving beyond literal representation to capture the inner essence of landscapes rather than their outward forms. Through the use of an earthy palette and bold calligraphic strokes, as well as unconventional methods for spontaneous expression, the artist aims to strike a balance between structure and fluidity. The layering process reflects a journey of attachment and release, embracing imperfections and evolving through each stage. Ultimately, this series blends ancient Eastern philosophies with contemporary abstraction, reimagining landscapes in a harmonious fusion of tradition and innovation.
