Artist in Residence South Africa NPO 243-824
About This Opportunity
AiRSA supports two funded residencies in South Africa 1. Tankwa Artscape Residency takes place in the South African desert Tankwa Karoo. It’s open to visual artists, site-responsive artists, performance/dance/spoken word artists, who are willing and open to engage with the desert landscape as well as its history as a place where South Africa’s First People, the San (Bushmen) lived. We encourage artists to collaborate with each other. There is no formal exhibition of works produced, however artists present their work to each other and to some curators, journalists, gallerists, who make their way into this remotest part of the country for some days to see what emerged. Board and lodging is funded, accommodation is in tents in a desert camp. The desert is the artist’s studio. We offer a simple workshop with solar electricity. 2. Bodhi Khaya Residency takes place in the Overstrand region of the Western Cape, close to the sea in a forested nature reserve. We work with the concepts of maps, land-ownership, colonialism and politics of land. We encourage artists to collaborate with each other.
