About This Opportunity

The American Academy in Berlin offers the Berlin Prize, a semester‑long residential fellowship for American scholars, artists, writers, composers, and journalists. The fellowship supports advanced independent research and creative work in the humanities, social sciences, law, journalism, public policy, and related fields. Fellows live at the Hans Arnhold Center on Lake Wannsee, participate in a vibrant interdisciplinary community, and engage German audiences through lectures, readings, performances, and discussions. The Academy awards roughly two dozen fellowships each year, with a monthly stipend of $5,000, round‑trip airfare, accommodation, partial board, library access, and networking opportunities. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, submit a project proposal, curriculum vitae, writing samples, and references, and be able to commit to a full academic semester (four months). Visual artists and composers are invited only through nomination. The application deadline for the 2027‑28 cohort is September 25 2026. The Academy encourages projects addressing democracy, technology, climate, and trans‑Atlantic dialogue.
