About This Opportunity

Shiro Oni Studio, located in the small mountain town of Onishi in Gunma prefecture, Japan, invites artists of all disciplines to apply for its 2027 residency program. Each residency cohort consists of nine artists who live and work together for six weeks in a three‑story, 10‑bedroom house that offers private bedrooms (with futon or twin‑size bed), private studio spaces, a shared kitchen equipped with a professional gas range and Western oven, laundry facilities, a projector room with Apple TV, and communal areas with air‑conditioning and fans. Artists are loaned a bicycle for local travel and have access to a rooftop balcony for social gatherings. The program emphasizes independent management of daily life and artistic production, responsible use of facilities, and active participation in meetings and a group exhibition held during the final weekend. Applicants must speak English or Japanese, be in good health and able to ride a bicycle, and agree to donate a piece of artwork to the residency collection. The application period runs from July 1 to September 1, 2026, with interviews beginning in September and acceptance letters sent by December. No application fee is required.
