Photo residencies offer extremely valuable time and resources. They are opportunities to step away from your daily routine and responsibilities to dedicate an extended period of time, energy, and thought to your artistic practice. Photographers use residencies to finish projects, edit and print bodies of work, begin new work, experiment, produce images for ongoing projects, sequence exhibitions and photobooks, and more. There are many residencies that charge artists to attend; however, in keeping with The Open Call List’s emphasis on artist-friendly opportunities, this guide presents only residencies that are fully-funded. That is, every residency below offers cost-free participation, housing, food, and access to facilities during the entire duration of the residency. Many of the residencies also include generous stipends, travel honoraria, and/or other forms of support. Further, this guide specifically contains residencies that include darkroom facilities. However, not all of the residencies below require analog photographic practices to apply. Many also include digital resources like scanners, large format printers, lighting studios, editing suites, and more. For digital and analog photographers alike, this guide outlines some of the most artist-friendly residency opportunities to dedicate time and resources to your photographic practice.
