Melbourne City of Literature is opening applications for its Virtual Writers in Residence 2026. The program runs throughout November and is fully digital, allowing writers from any UNESCO City of Literature to engage with Melbourne’s vibrant literary community. Applicants may choose to work with one of ten host organisations, ranging from community‑focused story‑telling groups to theatre companies and libraries. Residents are expected to propose three interactions – such as workshops, written pieces, panels, or social media takeovers – or any creative idea that connects them with their chosen host. The residency provides a $1500 AUD stipend, full copyright retention, regular virtual meetings with fellow residents, and mentorship opportunities. To apply, writers must submit an expression of interest via the provided Wufoo form, nominating their preferred host and outlining their proposed project(s). The deadline for submissions is midnight on Monday 17 August 2026. No application fee is required. Eligibility is limited to writers who are residents of UNESCO Cities of Literature. This is an annual, recurring call, with the next edition expected to open in 2027.
