The Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM), in partnership with the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) and the Wyeth Foundation for American Art, offers the Betsy James Wyeth Fellowship in Native American Art once per year. The fellowship supports advanced scholarly research focused on historic or contemporary Native American artists, designers, and makers, emphasizing Indigenous methodologies and community collaboration. One fellowship is awarded annually, either a 12‑month predoctoral residency or a 9‑month postdoctoral/senior appointment, to be conducted between June 1 2027 and August 31 2028 in Washington, DC. Fellows receive a $53,000 stipend, up to $5,000 for short research trips, health‑insurance assistance, travel support to Washington, DC, and J‑1 visa assistance for international scholars. Additional resources include dedicated research space at SAAM’s Research and Scholars Center, desk space at NMAI’s Cultural Resources Center, mentorship from museum staff, and participation in seminars, workshops, and symposia. Eligibility is limited to scholars at three career stages: predoctoral (completed coursework and exams), postdoctoral (PhD earned within the past five years), or senior (PhD earned more than five years ago). Applicants must propose research centered on Native American artists, be fluent in English, and provide letters of support from tribal community members or artists. Smithsonian employees must observe a separation period before applying. The application is free and submitted online via the Smithsonian Online Academic Appointment System (SOLAA) by 15 October 2026.
