Who is eligible?
Visual artists, curators and art historians who want to deepen their practice and expand their network, can submit an application for a work period in the Netherlands or abroad in a residency offered by the Mondriaan Fonds. With the Residency regulation, the Mondriaan Fonds stimulates the deepening of artistic development and practice of visual artists, curators and art historians, both in the Netherlands and abroad. This is done by staying in a designated studio, both in the Netherlands and abroad, resulting in new (inter-)national contacts and markets being explored. The goal is to create work that makes a meaningful contribution to contemporary visual art and/or cultural heritage in the Netherlands and/or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
For what?
The contribution is intended for travel, stay and material costs. The rent of the studio and/or living space is usually paid directly by the Mondriaan Fonds to the residency.
How much?
Your own contribution is at least 10% of the amount that the Mondriaan Fonds determines for your work period. This can be an own investment, a contribution from third parties, a non-interest bearing loan from the Fonds Kwadraat or a contribution via crowdfunding. The contribution to residents established in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom can be increased to take into account any higher travel costs. This will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
How and when to apply?
The deadline for submitting an application for a work period in 2026 is Thursday, September 11, 2025, before 16:00 (Netherlands time) / 10:00 (Caribbean time). To submit an application, you can create an account on this website, if you don't already have one. Please note that there is a processing period of 3 months from the moment the application is fully submitted. A contribution cannot be awarded retrospectively. You can submit an application as an artist, curator or art historian for a maximum of 2 residencies per round. For 2 applications for 2 different residencies, the quality and development of your oeuvre/(work) practice and the quality of your cultural entrepreneurship as an artist, curator or art historian will only be evaluated once. This evaluation is therefore valid for both applications. For each residency, you must submit a separate form with attachments. Indicate on the form which residency you prefer. A residency contribution can be awarded to the same applicant a maximum of once per calendar year. This explanation is based on the Residency Regulation, as published in the State Gazette.
