open call residency suriname 2026
About This Opportunity
The residency is inspired by the Surinamese concept of alakondre, which literally means "all lands." The concept symbolizes coexistence within cultural diversity and emphasizes the power of differences existing side by side. In Suriname, alakondre takes shape in the way diverse traditions, languages, and worldviews influence, overlap, and sometimes clash. Alakondre is therefore not only about harmony, but also about acknowledging historical inequality, cultural sensitivities, and tensions stemming from colonial and socioeconomic realities. It addresses the social, historical, and spiritual stratification of Surinamese society. This context demands an open mind and an awareness of the position one occupies as a creator. Personal stories—such as family history or identity—can serve as valuable starting points. At the same time, the residencies invite creators to broaden their practice and develop work that contributes to a broader, contemporary cultural dialogue in Suriname.
