Miles Morland Writing Scholarship

London, United Kingdom
The Miles Morland Foundation
Deadline: September 22, 2025

About This Opportunity

The scholarship supports writers of fiction or non-fiction who were born in Africa or have both parents born in Africa. Its goal is to enable writers to produce the first draft of a full-length book in English. Writers will receive a grant of £18,000, paid over 12 months. Non-fiction writers needing additional research time may be considered for an 18-month period. Scholars must submit 10,000 new words monthly and are encouraged to donate 20% of future income from the supported book back to the foundation — as a “debt of honour” to fund future writers.

Restrictions

Must be writing in English. Must be born in Africa or have two parents born in Africa. Must submit a published and sold excerpt (2,000–5,000 words). Proposed work must be a new, full-length book (80,000+ words). Not eligible for poetry, plays, scripts, children’s books, or collections.
