Contemporary Art Research Grant
Purpose of the Grant
The grant aims to support research and investigation activities in the field of contemporary art, with the goal of promoting the development and internationalization of Japanese contemporary art.

Eligibility
Eligible Activities
- 1）Research and investigation activities related to contemporary art in Japan (contemporary art history, curation, preservation and restoration of contemporary art works, education and dissemination through contemporary art, exhibition technology, archives, art management, etc.)
- 2）Research and investigation activities related to artistic creation (fieldwork, interviews with experts, research on materials and techniques, etc.)
- ※Residency programs can also be used for research and investigation activities (Artist-in-Residence, Curator-in-Residence, etc.)
Eligible Period
After the adoption decision, from the date of the agreement to the end of March 2027
- ※The agreement is expected to be concluded by January 2026.
- ※If the research and investigation project's activities span before and after the eligible period, applications are possible, but the period during which the grant can be used (i.e., the period during which the expenditure is eligible for the grant) is the above period.
Eligibility Restrictions
- 1）Individuals or research groups/organizations conducting research and investigation on contemporary art in Japan
- ＊Activities by researchers, museum curators, independent curators, art managers, archivists, educators, and exhibition technicians, etc. are also eligible.
- 2）Artists engaged in creative activities (individuals or groups)
- ※No distinction is made between individuals and organizations.
- ※If the applicant has received a grant from this foundation in the past, a report (including any additional materials requested or confirmed by the foundation) must be submitted.
Grant Amount
Total grant budget: ¥70,000,000 (estimated)
1 application: ¥300,000 to ¥30,000
Use of Grant
The grant will be used for the necessary expenses to achieve the purpose of research and investigation in the field of contemporary art.
- ※If the grant is received in conjunction with other grants from other organizations, the grant cannot be used for the same expenses as the other grants.
- ※The grant can be used for the artist's fee and necessary expenses for the project.
- ※The grant can also be used for the expenses related to the presentation and creation of the research results.
However, if the research and investigation activities are not conducted within the eligible period, the application will not be accepted.

- ・「Researcher」: Research and investigation activities related to contemporary art in Japan (no production of works, research and investigation only)
- ・「Artist」: Research and investigation activities related to the creation and presentation of contemporary art (mainly research and investigation activities for creation and presentation)

※The electronic application system may take time to operate, so please apply with sufficient time.
Selection Method
- 1）Selection and evaluation method
The selection committee, composed of members of the foundation's cultural and artistic division and experts as needed, will conduct the selection and evaluation.
2）Evaluation criteria
①Whether the research and investigation activities are expected to contribute to the development and internationalization of Japanese contemporary art
②The artistic, social, and academic significance of the research and investigation content
③The specificity and feasibility of the research and investigation methods and schedule
④Past research and investigation achievements
3）Notification of selection and evaluation results
After the selection and evaluation, the results will be notified to all applicants by email and on the My Page by the end of December 2025.
- ※The foundation cannot respond to inquiries about the selection and evaluation process or results.
Grant Payment
After the agreement is concluded between the foundation and the grant recipient, the grant payment procedure will be progressed.
Reporting Obligation
1）Within 3 months after the grant is used, please submit the following reports.
①Activity Report
Please submit a report on the implementation schedule, research and investigation content, and any other relevant information.
- ②Accounting Report
Please submit a report on the use of the grant and attach a copy of the supporting documents.
- ③Results
Please submit the research results, including research papers, investigation reports, exhibition catalogs, and photographs of the exhibition.
- ※If the research and investigation project is continued after the eligible period, please submit the above reports for the period during which the grant was used.
The final report will be submitted after the research and investigation are completed, and the details will be coordinated with the foundation and the grant recipient.
- 2）If the applicant needs to change the application content after adoption, please submit a "Change of Application Content Notification".
The foundation will notify the applicant of the approval or rejection after confirmation.
- ※Changes to the adopted activity, purpose, or scope are generally not approved.
