Artists in Residence

The Nieuw en Meer artists community offers a guest studio on their premises. We welcome applications from artists in all disciplines for work periods of up to three months. Located in the beautiful surroundings of the Oeverlanden, a park adjacent to the Nieuwe Meer lake in Amsterdam, the guest studio offers the ideal environment for artists to focus on personal reflection and concentration, but also for exchange and collaboration with artists from our community. Originally a munitions depot for the National Defence, the first buildings date back to 1918 and were part of the "Stelling van Amsterdam". After the military storage facilities were decommissioned, the complex was squatted in the summer of "88. Since then, Nieuw en Meer has been operating independently and currently provides accommodation for around 100 artists, residents and small businesses. The independent position and unique location are unparalleled in the cultural landscape of Amsterdam. The city centre of Amsterdam is easily accessible by bike or bus (20 minutes). In recent years, Nieuw en Meer has focused on the sustainability of the community and the terrain, particularly with regard to the maintenance of the buildings and the ecological aspects of the surrounding land and permaculture. In our Cantina and on our forecourt, occasional events are organized, ranging from small concerts or theatrical performances to exhibitions and workshops.
