SPACE DEPARTMENT Artist-in-Residence-Programm 2027

SPACE DEPARTMENT Nara is an artist‑run, independent creative hub located in the historic city of Nara, Japan. The 2027 Artist‑in‑Residence Program runs from March 1 to November 30, 2027 and accepts stays of 1‑3 months (up to 6 months according to the host site). Residents live in a private, self‑contained house, receive a private studio, Wi‑Fi, utilities and basic tools, and benefit from the hub’s technical staff and program coordinator. The residency is research‑based and welcomes visual artists, architects, designers, performers, filmmakers and other practitioners whose work explores physical, architectural, environmental or experiential space. Both emerging and established creators from Japan and abroad may apply, individually or in groups of up to four people (group rates available). Applicants must be able to organise at least one workshop, event, exhibition or performance during their stay. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis between 1 Oct 2026 and 31 Aug 2027. A fee of USD 1,400 per person per month (plus a refundable JPY 70,000 deposit) covers accommodation, studio access, Wi‑Fi and utilities; travel, food, materials and insurance are not included. The program provides cultural orientation, introductions to local artists and communities, and letters of support for external funding applications.
