Über Diese Gelegenheit

From the 2026‑07‑24 PDF, the Erie Canal Museum and the New York State Canal Corporation invite two artists to serve as Erie Canal Artists in Residence for a one‑year period beginning January 1 2027. The residency focuses on a creative inquiry into the New York State Canal System, encouraging artists to engage with the canal’s history, communities, and landscape. Applicants must propose a visual project that can be exhibited in a gallery setting and must directly address the canal. The program offers a $10,000 stipend paid in quarterly installments, with an additional up to $2,000 available for production costs. Selected artists will participate in public‑facing programming, including two joint virtual panels and at least one additional event, and their work will be exhibited in a museum/gallery venue along the corridor in 2028. The residency is part‑time and does not include workspace or housing. Eligibility requires artists to be 18 years or older, not enrolled full‑time in school, and preferably have ancestral ties to the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and/or Mohican Nation or live/work in canal communities. Only individuals or collectives may apply; corporate representation is not allowed. Applications open August 1 2026 and close September 6 2026; the application must be submitted as a PDF to employment@eriecanalmuseum.org.
