The Graham Foundation’s Carter Manny Award is an annual grant program that assists PhD candidates working on dissertations focused on architecture, architectural history, art history, design, engineering, landscape architecture, urbanism, and related fields. Two awards are offered each year: a Research Award (up to $20,000) to support travel, documentation, materials, and other research costs, and a Writing Award (up to $25,000) to facilitate the final stages of dissertation writing. Applicants must be PhD candidates officially enrolled in U.S. or Canadian institutions and must be nominated by their academic department (up to two nominations per department per cycle). The 2027 award cycle opens for applications on September 15, 2026, with a deadline of November 15, 2026, 5 p.m. Central Time. Selected awardees receive a one‑year grant period beginning September 1, 2027. Applications are submitted through the Graham Foundation’s GrantsConnect portal.
