Über Diese Gelegenheit

The 2027 Hyogu Residency, hosted by Toma House AIR in Nara, Japan, invites artists, artisans, designers, curators, researchers, and anyone interested in the traditional Japanese art of paper mounting (hyogu) to participate in a four‑week intensive program. Participants will learn the full process of kakejiku (hanging scroll) mounting under the guidance of seasoned mounters from the century‑old Seikadou studio, and will gain hands‑on experience with materials, techniques, and craftsmanship. The residency includes a dedicated studio space, shared kitchen and living facilities, a set of professional mounting tools, an English‑Japanese bilingual interpreter, field trips to local workshops and cultural sites, and a comprehensive handbook. Accommodation is provided in either the historic 18th‑century Toma House or the renovated annex, with four‑week stays. The program is self‑funded; applicants must cover travel, visa, and personal expenses. Applications are accepted via an online form, with the Autumn session running from 16 Oct to 12 Nov 2027 and the application deadline on 30 Apr 2027. The residency is part of an annual series, making it a recurring opportunity for artists worldwide.
