The University of California, Davis has appointed performance artist Cassils to the Maria Manetti Shrem Endowed Chair in the Art Studio Program. The endowed chair, funded by a $20 million commitment from philanthropist Maria Manetti Shrem, supports faculty excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and expanded opportunities for students, artists and the broader community. Cassils, a Canadian transgender artist known for powerful performances that interrogate LGBTQIA+ histories and violence, will join the College of Letters and Science as a faculty member beginning July 1, 2026. The role involves teaching, research, and mentorship, and provides access to studio space and institutional resources. The appointment strengthens UC Davis’s commitment to the arts and offers Cassils a platform to continue their practice while engaging students in research and creative exploration.
