Calgary Arts Development (CADA) is seeking an artist or artist team to join the City of Calgary’s Walden Fire Station and Library project team to create permanent public artwork(s) for the combined fire station and library planned for the community of Walden. The commission will award a total project budget of C$275,000 (exclusive of taxes) and an artist fee of C$68,750 + GST. The opportunity is open to local and national professional artists or teams with at least five years of experience, a minimum of three outdoor permanent public art installations with a lifespan of over ten years and a project budget of at least C$150,000, and who are available to begin work in September 2026 and complete the final concept and design by July 2027. Applicants must submit an Expression of Interest through CADA’s online platform by 1 pm MT on July 28 2026. The selection process includes a review of the artist’s portfolio, community engagement plan, and a short interview with shortlisted candidates. The selected artist will collaborate with the City of Calgary’s project manager, architect, and contractor throughout the design, fabrication, installation, and stewardship phases, and will lead community engagement and research to ensure the artwork reflects the environment and the dual function of the building. CADA offers staff support for applicants, including one‑on‑one assistance and the possibility to pay external support. The project timeline places the artist’s design phase from September 2026 to July 2027, with fabrication and installation scheduled for the second half of 2027 into 2028. The artist will own the copyright to the design, and the work will be site‑specific, engaging the community and addressing environmental themes.
