The James Castle House offers two residency formats for emerging and mid‑career artists, scholars, creators, and professionals: a two‑month residency with a $4,000 stipend and a two‑week residency with a $1,000 stipend. Both programs provide private living quarters, a private studio, ADA‑accessible facilities, and the opportunity to engage with the Boise community through public events, workshops, and open studios. Residents work alone on projects that respond to the history and legacy of James Castle and the site, and at the end of the term they donate a selected piece to the City of Boise’s collection. Applications for the 2027 terms are open from July 16 to August 28, 2026, with notifications in September 2026. Available terms are March 1 – April 30, June 1 – July 31, and September 1 – October 31 for the two‑month residency, and January 11 – 25 and December 1 – 15 for the two‑week residency. Eligibility requires legal ability to work in the United States, a background check, and being 18 years or older. The residency welcomes all disciplines but cannot accommodate loud or especially messy processes due to property limitations.
